Commuting Idempotents, Square-free Modules, and the Exchange Property
We give a criterion for when idempotents of a ring R which commute modulo the Jacobson radical J(R) can be lifted to commuting idempotents of R. If such lifting is possible, we give extra information about the lifts. A “half-commuting” analogue is also proven, and this is used to give sufficient conditions for a ring to have the internal exchange property. In particular, we show that if R/J(R) ...
متن کاملSolvable Monoids with Commuting Idempotents
The notion of Abelian kernel of a finite monoid extends the notion of derived subgroup of a finite group. In this line, an extension of the notion of solvable group to monoids is quite natural: they are the monoids such that the chain of Abelian kernels ends with the submonoid generated by the idempotents. We prove in this paper that the finite idempotent commuting monoids satisfying this prope...
متن کاملCommuting Idempotents of an H∗-algebra
Commutative H *-algebra is characterized in terms of idempotents. Here we offer three characterizations. 1. Introduction. In the past, the author used commuting idempotents to characterize continuous functions defined on a certain space [3, 4]. For example , it was shown in [3] that a certain Banach algebra is isometrically isomorphic to the space C(S) of all continuous complex-valued functions...
متن کاملFREE SEMIGROUPS AND IDEMPOTENTS IN T
The known theory for an oid T shows how to find a subset T of ?T, which is a compact right topological semigroup [I]. The success of the methods in [2] for obtaining properties of-T has prompted us to see how successful they would be in another context. Thus we find (Theorem 4.8) that T cont ains copies of free semigroups on 2? generators, is an immediate consequence of the stronger resu...
متن کاملCommuting Pauli Hamiltonians as Maps between Free Modules
We study unfrustrated spin Hamiltonians that consist of commuting tensor products of Pauli matrices. Assuming translation-invariance, we observe that the Hamiltonian is described by a map between modules over the translation group algebra, so homological methods are applicable. We show universal properties of topologically ordered phases in low spatial dimensions. Particularly, we prove that in...
